Low-Cost Sensor Network

What is the low-cost air quality sensor program?

MARC has acquired 75 low-cost air quality sensors to collect particulate matter levels across the nine-county region. Originally started by KC Digital Drive, the MARC Air Quality Program will expand the existing sensor network to create a cohesive network of sensors that provides real-time air quality data collected for public awareness, education, and decision-making

Where will the sensors be deployed?

Sensors will be deployed across the 9-county MARC region, at residential, public and institutional sites. The sensors will be distributed to enable MARC to produce a heat map, showcasing the status of air quality in the region.

Why is the sensor poject important?

Fine particulate matter levels have steadily increased in certain areas of the region. Additionally, the EPA recently tightened regulations on PM2.5, lowering the annual standard from 12 µg/m³ to 9 µg/m³ to protect public health. The sensor program will supplement the region’s federal monitors and provide additional data for public use, supporting public awareness and data-driven policy.

Host a sensor

Individuals and organizations are invited to host an air quality sensor on their property. Sensor hosts must have wifi and external electric outlets to keep the sensors operational. Hosts are asked to keep sensors online for a minimum of three years.
